Circular Green Economy

Our Approach to Circularity

Abu Qir Fertilizers’ vision for a circular carbon economy is based on the concept of establishing a closed-loop system in which all value chains return to their starting point — transforming waste and by-products into new productive inputs of economic value.
This approach focuses on designing and developing sustainable products, while improving industrial operations to enable the capture and reuse of carbon-containing gases as feedstock within an integrated production cycle.
To establish this circular carbon system, the company implements a comprehensive strategy that includes a set of innovative solutions built around four main pillars:

The company works to minimize the consumption of natural resources and energy throughout all production stages by adopting high-efficiency technologies, optimizing operational processes, and reducing carbon emissions resulting from industrial activity.

Abu Qir strives to reuse by-products and emitted gases within the same production cycle to maximize resource efficiency and minimize waste generation.

The company applies advanced recycling systems for water, chemicals, and industrial waste, reintegrating them into the production process. This practice reduces reliance on virgin raw materials and enhances environmental efficiency.

Abu Qir adopts innovative solutions to capture carbon-based gases such as CO₂ and nitrogen oxides (NOx) and convert them into valuable feedstock or products such as urea — contributing to reducing the company’s carbon footprint and achieving carbon neutrality.

Abu Qir Fertilizers has, since its establishment, embraced circular economy practices across all operational and production stages, ensuring maximum resource utilization and minimal waste. The company’s philosophy is centered on achieving a closed-loop system where no resource is wasted but rather reused in new production cycles — supporting efforts toward carbon neutrality and environmental sustainability. Among the most prominent circular economy practices implemented by the company are:

Utilizing Carbon Dioxide

Carbon dioxide produced as a by-product during ammonia production — in the manufacture of urea (granular and prilled). Each ton of ammonia generates 1–2 tons of CO₂, which are fully reused in the process.

Liquefying CO₂

Generated from ammonia production in the ammonium nitrate plant and using it for other industrial purposes.

Converting Nitrogen Oxides (NOx)

_NOX is one of the greenhouse gases, into nitrogen and water vapor using the EnviNOx unit, resulting in emission reductions equivalent to about 1.4 tons of CO₂ annually. These reductions are certified as carbon credits tradable on international platforms.

Recovering About 85% of Treated Water

Recovering about 85% of treated water through the ZLD unit and reusing it in operational processes, which reduces freshwater consumption, addresses water scarcity, and lowers the need for treatment chemicals.

Redirecting Industrial-grade (off-spec)

Redirecting industrial-grade (off-spec urea for sale to other industries for various applications — promoting reuse and minimizing industrial waste.
