Ministry of Foreign Affairs Organizes Visit of Latin American Ambassadors to Abu Qir Fertilizers Plant
On February 26, 2023, Dr. Hazem Fahmy, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for American Affairs, accompanied by the ambassadors of Latin American countries accredited in Cairo, conducted a working visit to the Abu Qir Fertilizers & Chemical Industries plants. This visit reflects the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ commitment to familiarizing Latin American countries with the rapid developments in Egypt’s industrial sector and the country’s ambitious plans to meet global fertilizer demand, supporting efforts to achieve global food security.
Eng. Abed Ezz El-Regal, Chairman and Managing Director of Abu Qir Fertilizers, welcomed the delegation and presented the company’s capabilities in manufacturing and exporting nitrogen fertilizers to international markets. The visit also highlighted the company’s comprehensive rehabilitation and modernization program for its plants, carried out in line with a strategy of local manufacturing for most of the equipment used. Additionally, the company shared its digital transformation plans, including full implementation of electronic systems across all internal and external operations, and the operation of its first solar power plant with a capacity of 117 kW, which helps reduce energy consumption and lowers CO₂ emissions by approximately 175 tons per year.

Dr. Fahmy also discussed the state’s efforts to develop Egypt’s fertilizer production ecosystem, in line with presidential directives to expand this vital industry. This expansion not only strengthens the national economy but also addresses global market shortages amid current international tensions.
During the visit, the delegation reviewed Egypt’s latest fertilizer export performance, which increased by 42% in 2022, reaching $3.38 billion compared to $2.4 billion in 2021, and discussed plans by the Fertilizer Export Council under the Ministry of Trade and Industry to organize trade missions to Latin America to explore ways to meet the fertilizer needs of those markets.
