Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Witnesses Signing Three Strategic Agreements to Develop Abu Qir Fertilizers Plants
Engineer Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, witnessed the signing of three strategic agreements aimed at developing Abu Qir Fertilizers & Chemicals Company’s plants, enhancing energy efficiency, and promoting sustainability.
The agreements reflect the company’s strong commitment to reducing carbon emissions and optimizing energy use in its production operations.
The first agreement was signed by Engineer Abed El-Raggal, Chairman and Managing Director of Abu Qir Fertilizers, with Bjorn Q. Aaserod, CEO of MPS USA, to supply green hydrogen produced via water electrolysis using renewable energy. This hydrogen will partially replace natural gas in production processes. The project will be implemented by MPS within Abu Qir’s industrial zone, utilizing available facilities and vacant spaces. It is expected to reduce natural gas consumption, cut carbon emissions, and enhance compliance with European emission standards, particularly under the CBAM mechanism, while increasing the production capacity of Ammonia Abu Qir (1).

The second agreement was signed between Engineer Ahmed El Sherbini, Vice President of ABB Group for Energy, Automation, and Digital Solutions, and MPS USA’s CEO, in the presence of Engineer Ibrahim Maki, Chairman of the Egyptian Holding Company for Petrochemicals, and Engineer Moataz Atef, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Petroleum.
The third agreement was signed between Engineer Ahmed El Sherbini (ABB) and Engineer Abed El-Raggal (Abu Qir Fertilizers) to install an advanced automated control system at Ammonia Abu Qir (1). This system aims to reduce natural gas consumption in the plant’s steam boilers by 2–4% in its first phase, improve operational efficiency, optimize energy resource use, and raise overall plant efficiency. Future plans include extending the system to Abu Qir plants (2) and (3).

Engineer Abed El-Raggal highlighted that these projects reinforce Abu Qir’s leadership in the nitrogen fertilizers industry by enhancing energy efficiency, lowering emissions, and improving the competitiveness of its products in international markets with low-carbon offerings that minimize future carbon-related taxes. He added that the agreements demonstrate the company’s adoption of cutting-edge global technologies, supporting the national economy, achieving sustainable development, and strengthening the international competitiveness of Egyptian products.
