Minister of Industry Inspects Abu Qir Fertilizers and Chemical Industries Complex

Eng. Khaled Hashem:

  1. Abu Qir Fertilizers Company is a long-established industrial powerhouse in the production and marketing of nitrogenous and liquid fertilizers in Egypt, the Middle East, and Africa.
  2. The fertilizer industry is one of the industries targeted under the Ministry of Industry’s strategy, as it represents a key link in the value chains associated with the agricultural and food sectors.
  3. The government has maintained stable energy supplies required for the production processes of the fertilizer sector during global crises and regional geopolitical tensions, contributing to the continuity of production, enabling factories to meet domestic market needs, and strengthening Egyptian exports.

Eng. Khaled Hashem, Minister of Industry, accompanied by Eng. Ayman Attia, Governor of Alexandria, inspected the Abu Qir Fertilizers and Chemical Industries Complex.

The Minister was accompanied during the tour by Eng. Mohamed Zada, Assistant Minister of Industry for Strategic Industries; Major General Ehab Amin, Head of the Industrial Control Authority; and Dr. Nermin Abu El-Ata, Advisor to the Minister of Industry for Sustainable Development.

The Minister began his tour by inspecting the industrial complex of Abu Qir Fertilizers and Chemical Industries Company, which is located on an area of 420,000 square meters in the Rashid area, with investments of EGP 24 billion and authorized capital of EGP 3 billion.

The company’s factories have an annual production capacity of approximately 1.8 million tonnes of high-quality nitrogen fertilizers, including 1.097 million tonnes of standard and specialty urea and 725,000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate fertilizer, in addition to liquid ammonia, UAN liquid fertilizer, and new value-added products.

The company has a 71% local component, exports approximately 48–50% of its annual production to markets in Europe, the Americas, the Mediterranean region, and Southeast Asia, and provides 2,392 direct employment opportunities.

The Minister was received at the facility by Eng. Hany Dahi, Chairman and Managing Director of the company. During the tour, the Minister inspected the company’s three plants to review the production lines for ammonia, urea, ammonium nitrate, nitric acid, and specialty urea.

The tour also included an inspection of the company’s Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) industrial wastewater treatment unit, which has a designed capacity of 650 cubic meters per hour.

The unit represents one of the company’s major environmental projects, implemented as part of its commitment to maximizing resource utilization and achieving environmental sustainability. It contributes to the treatment and reuse of industrial wastewater, thereby reducing its environmental impact and generating economic value from water resources. It also reduces the quantities of chemicals required to treat equivalent volumes of water, while producing ammonium sulfate as a by-product that can be utilized for agricultural purposes.

Eng. Hany Dahi, Chairman and Managing Director of Abu Qir Fertilizers and Chemical Industries Company, presented an overview of the company’s operational technologies and modern control systems used to manage and monitor production processes and support digital transformation.

He also highlighted measures undertaken to improve operational efficiency and productivity, as well as the effectiveness of the company’s occupational health and safety systems and environmental protection measures.

The company’s diverse product portfolio was also presented, including ammonia, ammonium nitrate, specialty urea, and standard urea, which collectively cover more than 25% of domestic demand for fertilizers, in addition to the company’s exports to international markets.

During the visit, Minister Hashem stated that Abu Qir Fertilizers Company is a long-established Egyptian industrial powerhouse in the production and marketing of nitrogenous and liquid fertilizers in Egypt, the Middle East, and Africa, in terms of production volumes, product diversification, and its contribution to supporting the state’s plans to achieve food security, meet domestic market needs, strengthen exports, and generate foreign currency revenues in support of the national economy.

He praised the advanced production and technical capabilities he observed within the company’s facilities.

The Minister added that the fertilizer industry is one of the industries targeted under the Ministry of Industry’s strategy, as it constitutes an important link within the value chains connected to the agricultural and food sectors. The industry contributes significantly to creating economic added value, providing thousands of employment opportunities, and supporting productive activities.

He noted that the government has provided substantial support to the fertilizer sector in recent years, which witnessed global crises and regional geopolitical tensions that affected fertilizer production in several countries.

According to the Minister, Egypt’s fertilizer sector remained resilient amid these surrounding crises due to the stability of the energy supplies required for production, without interruptions or reductions in quantities. This contributed to maintaining production across the fertilizer sector, enabling factories to meet domestic market requirements and strengthen Egyptian exports.

For his part, Alexandria Governor Ayman Attia emphasized the importance of the fertilizer industry as one of the vital industries supporting the agricultural sector and food security, in addition to its role in strengthening Egyptian exports and generating foreign currency.

He noted that the governorate is committed to supporting major industrial entities and encouraging their development and expansion plans, while maintaining compliance with environmental standards and sustainability requirements, thereby reinforcing Alexandria’s position as one of Egypt’s most important industrial and production centers.

During the visit, Eng. Hany Dahi, Chairman and Managing Director of Abu Qir Fertilizers and Chemical Industries Company, affirmed that the company is implementing its long-term strategic vision in cooperation with global consulting firm McKinsey & Company, with the aim of enhancing productivity, improving energy efficiency, accelerating digital transformation, reducing its carbon footprint, expanding the use of solar energy, and developing new value-added products.

He also highlighted the company’s commitment to applying the highest standards of corporate governance, compliance, and sound environmental management, in a manner that supports sustainable growth and maximizes shareholder returns.

Dahi noted that, thanks to the company’s strong operational and financial capabilities and its qualified workforce, Abu Qir Fertilizers is continuing its journey to consolidate its leadership position and strengthen its contribution to food security by fulfilling its national commitments to providing subsidized fertilizers to the domestic market, while simultaneously achieving sustainable growth in line with the Egyptian state’s vision of building a more competitive and sustainable economy.
