Abu Qir Fertilizers Signs Agreement with British Company BioFtech UK Ltd. to Produce Coated Urea Using Advanced Technology
As part of Abu Qir Fertilizers’ vision to invest in innovation and continuous development, diversify its product portfolio, and leverage modern technologies in the production of specialized fertilizers that deliver higher added value, while keeping pace with rapidly evolving global markets and the growing demand for more efficient agricultural products, the company has signed an agreement with British company BioFtech UK Ltd., a member of the Innovativa Group, to implement a project for the production of Coated Urea.
The project aims to produce approximately 132,000 tons of coated urea annually, with a production capacity of 400 tons per day. Coated Urea offers promising export opportunities in a number of international markets, amid the global drive to improve fertilizer-use efficiency, reduce emissions, minimize nutrient losses, and enhance the sustainability of agricultural production.
The product has also been registered with the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture, allowing it to be marketed locally. This supports the company’s competitiveness and strengthens its contribution to achieving the state’s objectives for sustainable industrial and agricultural development.
Coated Urea – A Specialized Product Enhancing Nitrogen-Use Efficiency
Coated Urea is produced by applying a coating of organic material to urea granules. This coating controls the rate at which urea dissolves and nitrogen is released into the soil, using specialized Fertilizer Coating Technology.
This technology helps extend the period during which the fertilizer remains available in the soil, while reducing nitrogen losses and limiting the amount of nitrogen reaching agricultural drainage water. As a result, it delivers positive benefits in terms of fertilizer-use efficiency, agricultural productivity, and environmental sustainability.
The project represents an important addition to Abu Qir Fertilizers’ efforts in the field of sustainability and reducing the carbon footprint of its products. The higher efficiency achieved through the use of coated urea contributes to reducing the quantities of fertilizer required and, consequently, lowering emissions associated with the application of urea to soil.
Eng. Hany Dahy: We Aim to Expand into Specialized, Value-Added Products
On this occasion, Eng. Hany Dahy, Chairman and Managing Director of Abu Qir Fertilizers and Chemical Industries Company, stated that the agreement represents another step in the company’s strategy of continuous development, diversification of its product portfolio, and expansion into specialized, value-added fertilizers.
He added that the company is working to keep pace with global developments in the fertilizer industry by adopting modern technologies that contribute to improving product-use efficiency, achieving environmental sustainability, reducing its carbon footprint, and strengthening the company’s competitiveness in global markets.
He further explained that the Coated Urea project combines economic viability, environmental considerations, and added value for the agricultural sector, while supporting the company’s direction toward developing products that meet the future requirements of both local and international markets, alongside continuing to explore new investment opportunities in innovation, technology, and sustainability.
It is worth noting that BioFtech UK Ltd., through its patented technologies—foremost among them the BUCoat® technology—is leading a significant advancement in the treatment and coating of nitrogenous and phosphate fertilizers using organic compounds and micronutrient-based biostimulants, including humic and fulvic acids and biostimulants.
These innovations ensure a gradual and consistent release of nutrients into the soil, thereby enhancing the plant’s ability to absorb nutrients and effectively reducing losses resulting from volatilization.
